Perimenopause and Palpitations

Tips for Relief

Exercise, Rest, & Meditation

These go together, funny as it seems. Lack of sleep and exercise can contribute to your palpitations. Both can increase your level of stress, which is another cause of these irritating irregularities.

Rest

Many women find that insomnia appears or worsens with perimenopause. You must get sleep. Everything is exponentially worsened without it.
If you absolutely cannot sleep, there is no shame in finding a medication that will help you. See the Insomnia page for more information.

Meditation

Study after study has confirmed that meditating can create profound change in your life. Many people feel they "can't" meditate or don't know how. We have a meditation kit that will show you how simple meditation can be.

Not "easy." Simple.

Because for many women, during this very stressful period, calming their minds is nearly impossible. But the surprising truth is that one doesn't have to quiet the mind for meditation to provide incredible benefits to body, mind, and spirit.

Exercise

Exercise releases stress and helps you to relax. For no other reason than the fact that palpitations can be frightening, once you've seen a doctor and confirmed that there is no underlying condition causing the palpitations, use exercise to feel stronger and take your mind off of them.

Food Plan

Well, you truly are what you eat. So, do you really want to be a slimey, gooey ball of fat ... or a lean, bright vegetation? Hey, have you ever seen a fat plant?
Seriously, the Achilles Heel of our society is an addiction to food that can kill us. Sugar and fat are added to smother our instinctive knowledge about what is good for us.

Start reading ingredient lists. Not just the sugar and fat content, but what you are truly ingesting.

By the way, caffeine and other products containing caffeine (like, um, chocolate candy bars) as well as alcohol can actually cause palpitations in some people.

Food Addiction

Many people are alcoholics with food. Certain substances, like sugar and flour, create insatiable appetites ... which can destroy people's health, relationships, and even their lives. If you think about it, what is alcohol but refined sugar and flour?

There is no question that continuing to eat food that is toxic will eventually kill you. If you need help ... there's plenty out there.

Physical Examinations

Ignorance is not bliss. You won't jinx your health by going to the doctor ... but you may cause premature death by neglecting your health.

Have an annual physical with both your internist and your gynecologist. To find a great doctor who understands perimenopause, check out our Find a Doctor page. There are many supplements purported to benefit the heart. But do not substitute common sense and self-care (e.g., seeing your doctor, taking appropriate medication when needed) for them. Supplements are just that—an addition to a complete plan for looking after yourself.
